This unique museum is dedicated to Paul Klee (1879-1940). One of the most eminent artists of the 20th century, he spent half his life in this city. The museum comprises 4000 paintings, watercolours and drawings, as well as biographical documentation. The collection is considered to be the largest devoted to any single artist of world renown. The building is also an attraction in its own right, having been designed in 2005 by star Italian architect Renzo Piano almost as an aesthetic extension to the city's surrounding landscape.
Bern's Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1879 and is the oldest in Switzerland with a permanent collection. It houses works covering eight centuries dating from the Middle Ages to modern times. The constantly changing international collection comprises more than 3000 paintings and sculptures, as well as 55,000 drawings, prints, photographs, videos and films. Special temporary exhibitions at various times this summer include "Seven Centuries of Swiss Art" and a Chilean-Swiss exhibition to mark the bicentenary of Chile's independence from Spain.
